Talk about confusion...all three pods came in yesterday (Friday) but they never made it all the way across...the Js made a left turn and remained as 'Canadian' whales for the day, as they headed north up the west side of Haro Strait...some Ls headed south and supposedly the Ks were coming straight toward the lighthouse...but then the Ks seemed to make a right turn and head down island...but there were some boats still out there...well, what do you know Opus and Sonata surfaced right in front of us...changed direction several times...at first I thought it was two others, Skagit (my first adopted whale - www.whalemuseum.org) ...and grandkid Comet...and it took a while looking at my pics later to realize that it was Opus and Sonata who kept surfacing a bit to the north and then a bit to the south...and in closer and then out farther...glad I took all those pics or I would never had figured it out...
...then the Wrigley's Moment..did you ever see that tv commercial, years ago, with the people standing on shore watching for the whale to surface. One person reaches to get something (gum, film - I don't really remember) but as she looks away the whale breaches (I think it was a humpback) and she misses the moment - that's the point 'missing the whole thing-in a second'...well that's what happened...after the two moved on, no blows, no vocals, no echos, and I was sooooo hungry....I could see whales to the south, far enough away to run and get my lunch...or so I thought...I left my camera and binos with my friends, took about 15 steps and heard, kwwooooofffff! and "Jeanne, right here!!!" ...now if I had kept my camera I might have been able to get a pic, but no, I had to run back over the rocks...it was a Wrigley's Moment for sure! ...it was Cappuccino and his sister Raggedy...too cool...always nice to see them...we waited and waited...but other Ks didn't come up....evidently they stayed south with some Ls....I can see another confusing day coming today....
