Which Way Did They Go???

Hello! Hello! ...K-43 here!Wednesday, June 9

..go figure...I wake up because I don't hear the hydrophones!...it was only 4:30...so I get up anyway and get ready...5:15 a.m. I hear one 'eeet' sound...sure sound like Ks...off and running to the park...nothing...it started raining a lot...go home...

...8:00a.m...I distinctly hear 3 'kitten calls' - "okay, I know that's K pod"...off to the park again...what?...nothing...I scanned and scanned and could find no whales...

...later a report came in that J pod was on their way up island...and before I know it they are passing the park...running again!!!...I missed about 6 whales...so I go to my spot to wait and the first whale I see surfacing is Onyx L-87 - What???? I thought J pod was here...Onyx travels with K pod!!

...and then I saw the K baby as they passed by the lighthouse......remember back in February when I had that exceptional encounter with J and K pods on Capt. Jim's boat (click to link to that encounter) - Maya's Westside Charters - and I thought there might be a new K pod baby??? I had sent the pics to the Center for Whale Research and they couldn't be sure either way, so we had to just wait...and on June 8th when K pod came in, the Center verified that in fact Sequim K-12 has a new baby...
...here's one of the pics of the baby I took on Februray 21, 2010 while out with Capt. Jim of Maya's Westside Charters...for that story link here...when K pod came in on Tuesday evening -June 8th- the Center for Whale Research met them...they verified that yes Sequim K-12 really did have a baby!!

...K43 was surfacing near sister Sekiu K-22 and male pod mate Lobo K-26...a few seconds later mom surfaced on the near side...

Here are some pics of K-43 taken on June 9th... while on board Maya's Westside Charters...
...K-43 just beginning to surface -the bubbles- next to mom Sequim K-12......K-43 and mom again...June 9th......the whales were so energetic, breaching, tail slapping, cartwheeling...so much energy all day long!...we just hope they are finding plenty of salmon......in the middle of it all a SEA OTTER popped up...Capt. Jim called out, "sea otter!" and I just started taking pictures...amazing!!! we were in the middle of the channel I believe just about to enter Swanson Channel...
...then on the evening trip with Capt. Jim...the whales were still at it!Raggedy K-40, Cappuccino K-21 and Opus K-16...
...who's that lying on Ruffles' back?....

...it was the first time I had been with the whales as they entered Active Pass...watching as they slowed their pace and moving together just before the entrance...Granny J-2 was at the lead of a large group...Capt. Jim explained what they would be doing next...and they did...they crossed over the pass and traveled on the far side of it...with oncoming ferries through this tight pass...K pod was behind J pod...
BUT WAIT - not all J Pod was present!!
the J11s, J22s and the J17s were not with them...
...the prior day (Tuesday) they were still at the lower end of Swanson Channel when the rest of J pod had already exited Active Pass...so my question is where were the J11s, J17s and J22s yesterday (Wednesday)? anybody see them?...hum...

...The next day is just as crazy...will post that next...
