Saturday, August 20th
...it began at 5:15 a.m. when echolocation clicks came over the Lime Kiln hydrophones...a J Pod call or two I heard before running out the door...not sure just why - it was dark out there still...was able to see some as they moved up island...
... a few hours later more whales came up island...
...pause for a harbor seal...
...a couple more whales in the distance...
...it wasn't even 11:00 a.m. what would the rest of the day bring...

Friday, August 5th
...after the whales came in on the 3rd they stayed north for a day and a half ...late in the day they were in Haro Strait, traveling against an incoming (up) current as they were coming down...
...it often slows them down...but this much...

...this veering offshore as they come down is something they have done now several times in July...I remember in years past the whales have moved offshore in July (and maybe august?)...seems that is where the salmon is...and that is most likely why they are doing that this year...
...thank you Jason for the the hydrophone fix!...back up and streaming...(they will be working on them again soon as this is a temporary fix)...but the timing was perfect...especially with the challenging lighting...and of course just about all the calls heard were L Pod calls...not surprising...
..audio helped to confirm who was present - way cool!!
Tuesday, JUly 19th
...on the 19th J Pod, the L4s and the L47s came back down from the north zooming past the lighthouse...by the end of the day they were seen heading west...
...here are a few pics I captured from shore...the whales surprised me and I missed most of them...
...present on the 19th were all of J Pod, the L4s and the L47s...usually the L26s and the L72s are with them, but it appears they were not today...
...the L12s were in and stayed off the lower part of San Juan Island...something they often do in the summer...
