6-5-13 What A Surprise to Start the Day

Wednesday, June 5th
...I was awakened at about 1:15 a.m. to calls that were very unusual...and as they continued they became more and more unusual...

...well that's because it was several families of L pod who showed up!!
...out on Maya's Westside Charters to see some whales I haven't seen in these waters since December 8th...

...some were in groups all mixed up - Js and Ls - no doubt saying 'hello'...

 

...there was lots of surface activity...

...from in shore to off shore...

...the seas were not very friendly, making it quite the challenge to get more than the sky or the water when taking pictures...but we all kept trying!
...the farther up island we got the nicer the seas got...thank goodness...and the whales just kept on having some social time as they moved along...

...for a long while they were hugging the shore...

...then some moved off and came directly at us...

...their blows stand out with the dark background...

...the whales continued past Kellett Bluff and headed up island...

...it was about 10:00 pm when I heard calls that indicated to me that some L pod whales were coming back down island...
...I wonder where they will be in the morning...
