...out on the Peregrine with Capt. Jim for an early morning trip we get word of inbound whales in the Strait of Juan de Fuca...
...we had no idea there was a surprise in store for us...
...the first whales we saw were Tika K-33 and Moonlight L-83...I kept questioning myself, but it was correct...it was also an extremely unusual pair...the only others nearby were the K13s...we heard of a group of moms and babies and headed over thinking it might be some of the J pod babies...wrong!
...that's when we saw a new baby in L pod...totally exciting...it had been seen by only a few people at that time and we learned later that it was first spotted out near Sooke that morning...

...The T65As and T49A2 we saw today, but since this post is about the new L pod baby, I will post about some of the transient encounters on another post...
...this afternoon we headed west to meet incoming whales...sort of like we did yesterday...luckily the seas were settling down and it was quite nice...
...first off we hear that someone thought they saw 'another' baby...but it was NOT...it was still L-122...two days in a row...sweet...
...yesterday Muncher and the baby were with Kasatka L-82 and Finn L-116 when we first saw them...and today the calf was with several...I especially liked this moment...
...there were several times when L-122 surfaced without anyone else surfacing...guess he/she needed a breath...but I sometimes wonder what is going on...this sequence sort of shows some of what we might not see, especially when there are many whales surfacing and diving and sometimes not all in the same spot...
...may this new member of the community thrive...
...are you making your phone calls to help the future of this community of orcas?
