...the J16s didn't report back to Granny J-2 (as I mentioned in my last post) what the salmon situation is like in here...evidently other J Pod whales were seen in the Strait of Juan de Fuca a couple days ago and they were already going west...those same J Pod whales had last been seen going west ten days before...wonder just how far they had come in...
May 8th
...and today (not having been seen since late in the day on the 3rd) the J16s were seen coming down Boundary Pass from the north, possibly doing a repeat from their last loop up by Texada Island north of the city of Vancouver...but with nasty seas up there for several days we'll never know exactly where they had been...
...they took many hours to reach the park...the sky was changing...rain was on Vancouver Island in some places...we got a great display...
May 9th
...5:30 a.m. J Pod calls wake me up over the Orca Sound hydrophones! what, not Lime Kiln?...they didn't stay long at Open Bay and turned and came back down island...it was now 6:45 a.m...
...they kept going down with the ebbing current...
...out on Peregrine...
...as we arrived on scene we could see that the whales were heading back up island, slowly and foraging as they went...
...it was interesting to watch as Scarlet J-50 would be switched off by mom, Slick J-16 and 9 year old Echo J-42...Scarlet wasn't changing places, the others were...
...as they began traveling up island...
...as they reached Lime Kiln...
...it was about 3:30 and they remained there for about 40 minutes before moving up island.
...3 hours later they were back at the park...
...if someone had called the Coast Guard - thank you!

Watch the movies: Damnation and Return of the River (they tell me they are on netflix)
REI produced a video on what happens to a river's ecosystem when a dam is built.
Look up the Elwha Dam breaching. What a huge and quick recovery the ecosystem there is experiencing.
Like what you see/watch/read? Please tell your friends, get them to call/sign and encourage that these dams come down and now...not in the distant future but now. The salmon don't have forever to wait and neither do the whales...and for that matter the humans.
