8-10-14 Add the L12s to the Mix!

Sunday, August 10th
...back to last night - 11:15 pm I begin hearing calls on the hydrophones...both the Lime Kiln and the Orca Sound hydrophones...I heard K pod calls only and there were way too many for it to have been only the 3 K pods whales who had gone out with the Ls the day before...
...then to confuse things this morning, I learn that L pod whales had been seen coming in last evening...and then a report of many whales way up north of the Fraser River...so just who was where is what had me curious...

...just about to leave the house to go out on Maya's Westside Charters for an afternoon trip, I begin hearing K pod calls and some L pod calls over the Lime Kiln hydrophones...aahh, so K pod actually did come down last night...
...as we left the harbor the whales were just approaching...

...as they made their way past Kellett Bluff...

...on up Haro Strait they continued...in the distance is Johns Island where there's a kids camp - see the teepee?
...I heard that the L12s are here and that they had turned and gone back down island...no telling who might have gone with them...
...Cappuccino K-21 and Opus K-16 and Sonata K-35  (the 3 K Klik whales) didn't...
...we continued up Haro Strait along Stuart island...

...reaching Turn Pt. where it was time for us to leave...
...back out on another trip, we meet the whales in the Strait of Georgia...they had been traveling fast, the flood tide was helping that along...there were a few spyhops...checking direction or 'are we there yet'?

...luckily for us they got into a resting pattern...it's challenging to get lots of 'fins up' at the same time...
...J pod was way up by the Fraser River or possibly a bit further to the north...I hope to see the L12s tomorrow, if they'll stay in tonight...they have only been in here a few times this season..

...the salmon numbers took a big jump up for a few days - and that's a good thing for the whales...
