...over the last several days the whales have been in the inland waters and back out toward the open ocean on multiple trips...
...they have been spread out for miles from leader to trailer and across the water from left to right...
...they have been doing a lot of foraging as they moved along...
...the last time they were here they didn't even go all the way to the Fraser River like they had been doing and some of them even came down Rosario Strait while others came down the west side...
...and then out they went...
...not a lot of calls over the hydrophones but lots of echolocation clicks of those heard...
...so what's the salmon abundance?...what are the whales showing us?...
...so when they came back in on the 14th it was a wonder of what would they do next...
...The Whale Museum just announced the names of the babies. Kiki which is short for the name Kikisoblu is totally tied in with J-53's mother...here's a link to read about Kikisoblu.
...this Steller sea lion had whales to his left and whales coming straight toward him!
...the J Pod whales had gone north and the K Pod whales had come back down island...but not sure if all of them came back down because they were so spread out...
...in the middle of all the vocalizations over the hydrophones some over Orca Sound and some over Lime Kiln there were some distinct sounding L Pod calls - the ones I call the 'up-tic' call...there weren't a lot of them...all the others were K Pod calls...no J Pod calls in the mix...
...I don't know if any L Pod whales were with the K Pod whales or not...
...a mystery as to who made those calls...I have an idea...will have to sleuth it out a bit more...
...the whales keep us guessing, I just wish we didn't keep them guessing as to where their salmon has disappeared to.
