6-3-14 A Whale of A Socializing Day!

Tuesday, June 3rd
...last night ended up with more whales showing up...it was so exciting to hear the L12s for the first time this year!...the other two family groups of J pod must have come back in with them, because there were just too many J pod calls to be coming from the group of four who had stayed south while the others had gone north earlier today...
...here's a short clip, cropped down from the 37 minutes of sheer delight on this human's part :)

...out on the Center for Whale Research boat Orca, with Dave Ellifrit and Florian, to document who was actually present...oh, it was to be a good day!...since images I take while out with the Center for Whale Research under Federal Permit don't belong to me, I post a few with the permission of the Center...

...we were greeted with...

...it was a social day with the return of the L12s and the other two families in J pod!
...the whales did not make it easy to get proper ID shots of them because they were having a great time socializing...it was quite something to see...
...lots of logging and intermingling...
...as they began to travel north they were in two groupings...but not what we might think...
...Group A and Group B, except for the J17s, were up ahead...
...the J17s were behind the rest of J pod and a short distance ahead of the L12s...
...Onyx L-87 was traveling on the outskirts of the L12s...
...so now the question was would they split off and come back down island like the L12s do so often?...or would they continue to move north with the rest of J pod?...and if they split off would the J17s stay with the L12s or go with the rest of J pod?...
...it was the middle of the night when I got part of the answer...
...calls on the hydrophones lead me to believe that the L12s and at least some of the J pod whales, if not all, were coming back down island...
...hope they stick around long enough to find out who's with who now!
