2-19-13 Winter Time

Tuesday, February 19th
...lots of wild life, but none of the wild black and white kind lately!
...out with Maya's Westside Charters recently, we've had some great bird encounters...
...these long tail ducks were not flighty as most usually are...
..this Great Blue Heron in the breeze...
...Cornell University has a fabulous site about birds.  Last year was the first year they had a Great Blue Heron cam...the herons should be building their nests in the not too distant future...last year was very interesting watching the male and female helping each other with stick placement...and then the eggs and a nighttime attack of an owl (really) and then the eggs hatching...the whole thing...very educational too.

What's been going on?

First and foremost I want to thank all of you who have enjoyed reading about the whales and looking at the images on Whale of A Purpose, Extras In the Whales' World, and Whale Comics, over the last several years.

What is most special to me is sharing ABOUT the whales, and from the many emails and comments I have received it is special for you too. My images are part of the story of the whales and it is not appropriate for them to be taken out of context and taken without permission.

My blog was being compromised so I shut it down.  It's a good time to do some upgrading, house keeping and redesigning. I hope to have Whale of A Purpose back up very soon.

~~

And now... for a whale encounter update. Today, February 9th, some J Pod whales showed up this morning and spent the day off the west side of San Juan Island in Haro Strait.

Was it Group A - Granny's Group?
or
Was it Group B - the J11s, J17s and J22s?

And where were the J16s in all this?

I only saw whales of Group B and only some members of each group of the J11s, J17s and J22s.

I don't think the J16s were with them this time...but I'm not completely sure...

...now back to working on getting Whale of A Purpose back up and running...

Thanks for your patience.

2-9-13 Vocalizing Video

Saturday, February 9th

...out with Capt. Jim of Maya's Westside Charters, it was an afternoon of watching what appeared to be lots of foraging behavior, accompanied with lots of play, and hours of vocalizations...the whales could be heard over the Lime Kiln and Orca Sound hydrophones throughout the afternoon and early evening.
...and as the whales were 'doing their thing' so were the passengers...some were quiet and shy, yet later exclaimed with delight that it was the best day of their life...others were 'beside themselves' with joy upon seeing a killer whale in the wild for the first time in their lives...that too brings me joy!

...I wonder how many smiles there were today for those who listened to the hydrophones as the whales spent the day being quite vocal...

Here's some of what they may have heard...

Enjoy the whales!   Thank you!
