3-28-13 Harbor Porpoise Rescue in Saanich Inlet

Thursday, March 28th
...with the seas completely flat this morning you might think it was the middle of summer...but it's not and it's not as likely that I'd see whales today because it's still March...
...but then I got to remembering 2005...it was about a month later than March...late in the day - 5pm about...
...I was sitting on the shore at the lighthouse...some harbor porpoise surfaced really close to shore...a few moments later some Dall's porpoise did the same...they were going up island and they were maybe 20' from the rocks...unusual...then a Steller sea lion surfaced going up island too and right along the shore too!...

...I was so excited seeing porpoises and the sea lion I didn't even notice the WHALES !  - yes !! right behind them was J pod!...that was their 'entrance' for the season back in 2005.
...funny thing is that no one had seen whales at any time during the day that day...the whales just 'all of a sudden' appeared.

...knowing that now, I can never take for granted that they won't show up 'unannounced'...

I mentioned harbor porpoise...there was one found beached in Saanich Inlet on Tuesday...it was rescued and taken to the Vancouver Aquarium...here are a couple links.
from the Times Colonist - Harbor Porpoise Rescue
and from the Vancouver Sun - Photos Vancouver Aquarium
One potential piece to the story is that on the day before the harbor porpoise was found 4 transients - Chainsaw T-63 and T-65, T-65B and her baby T-65B1 - were seen entering Saanich Inlet late in the day, close to 6pm. (that's from a friend in Canada who was on the water with them - lucky guy!!)...
